GST vs HST vs PST: Understanding Canadian Sales Taxes

GST (Goods and Services Tax)

The GST is a federal tax of 5% that applies to most goods and services sold in Canada. It is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency and applies uniformly across all provinces and territories. Businesses registered for GST can claim input tax credits to recover the GST paid on business purchases.

HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)

The HST combines the federal GST with a provincial component into a single tax, simplifying collection for businesses. Ontario charges 13% HST, while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island charge 15% HST. Businesses in HST provinces only need to remit one tax instead of two.

PST, RST and QST (Provincial Sales Taxes)

Provinces that do not use HST levy their own provincial sales tax in addition to the federal GST. British Columbia charges 7% PST, Saskatchewan charges 6% PST, and Manitoba charges 7% RST. Quebec administers its own QST at 9.975% through Revenu Quebec. Alberta, the three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut), do not charge any provincial sales tax.
