What Is a VAT Invoice?
A VAT invoice is a document issued by a VAT-registered business that details the goods or services supplied, the applicable VAT rate, and the total amount of VAT charged. It serves as proof of a taxable transaction and is required for both the seller to report output VAT and the buyer to reclaim input VAT. VAT invoices must include specific information such as the supplier's VAT registration number, invoice date, sequential invoice number, a description of goods or services, the net amount, the VAT rate applied, and the total amount including VAT. Different countries have specific requirements, but the core purpose remains the same: to document the tax collected at each stage of the supply chain and enable businesses to claim back the VAT they have paid on their purchases.

Simplified vs Full VAT Invoice
Simplified VAT Invoice
Used for lower-value transactions (e.g., under GBP 250 in the UK). A simplified invoice only requires the supplier's name, VAT number, date, description of goods or services, and the total amount including VAT. It does not need customer details or a line-by-line VAT breakdown.
Full VAT Invoice
Required for transactions above the simplified threshold and for all B2B transactions where the buyer needs to reclaim VAT. A full VAT invoice must include the customer's name and address, itemised prices excluding VAT, the VAT rate and amount for each line, and the total including VAT.
